VISA REQUIRED, PASSPORT REQUIRED

OVERVIEW
For US citizens to enter China, you need a visa as well as six months' validity remaining on your passport. If you do not have a valid passport and the appropriate Chinese visa, you will not be allowed to enter China and will be fined and subject to immediate deportation. A multiple-entry visa is essential if you plan to re-enter China, especially if you plan to visit either Hong Kong or Macau and return to China.

The following applies to U.S. Citizens:

TOURIST TRAVEL:

Step 1 - Gather the Following Requirements

 1.1

Current Passport

Applicant must submit their current passport. China visas are stamped into a passport, therefore the the original passport is required.
Note: In order to obtain China visas, passport must have one blank visa page (typically the last few pages of the passport are marked "Amendment" and are not valid for visas) and must be valid for at least six months past the date of entry into China.

 1.2

Photo Requirement

Applicant must submit two (2) identical, color, passport style photographs. The photos must be recent and generally should not be the same used for the passport itself. Passport photos can be obtained at most post offices, Kinko's, Walgreens, etc.

 1.3

Proof of Travel

Applicant must submit a computer-generated itinerary from a travel agency or online booking tool (such as e-confirmation from an airline or Travelocity, Orbitz, etc) showing departure from the U.S. and arrival/departure for China.

Recent changes to Chinese visa requirements require applicant to also submit one of the following:
1) Photocopy of round-trip airline ticket AND hotel reservation; OR

2) Invitation Letter for Tourist Group issued by a Duly Authorized Tourism Unit; OR

3) Invitation Letter issued by Chinese companies, corporations, institutions and individuals. If the invitation is issued by an individual, a photocopy of that person's Chinese ID is required.
Invitation letter issued by companies, corporations, institutions or individuals in China shall include the following items:
(A) Personal information of applicant: name, gender, date of birth, etc.
(B) Information concerning applicant's visit: purpose of visit, date of arrival and departure, places to visit, relationship between the applicant and the inviter, and who will bear the cost of the applicant's accommodations in China.
(C) Information of inviter: name of the unit or individual, phone number, address, and if applicable, seal and signature of the legal representative.
Invitation letter can be submitted as a photocopy. However, original invitation and/or personal interview may be requested at visa officer's discretion.

Although applicant may be submitting documents along with other family members, when submitted to an embassy or consulate, applications are treated individually. If applicant is under 18 years old, include the following:
1) Color copies of parents valid passports. If either, or both, parents do not have valid passports, include color copies of driver's license or other state issued ID. If either, or both, parents are not US citizens, include copies of ID and copies of US visa or permanent resident card (Green card).
2) Include a photocopy of the child's birth certificate.
3) Include a letter of authorization for child to obtain visa and travel.

Visa Application

Applicant must submit one completed China visa application. Applications should be printed single-sided and signed in blue or black ink only.

Note: The application as released by the Chinese government utilizes the latest version of Adobe Reader. You may be prompted by Adobe to "install simplified Chinese language pack".You must accept AND reboot computer in order for update to take affect before being able to complete the application.
Note: If applicant is former Chinese citizen (including Taiwanese), applicant must submit previous Chinese passport or proof of previously issued Chinese visa.

BUSINESS TRAVEL:

Step 1 - Gather the Following Requirements

Current Passport

Business Cover Letter 

Applicant must submit a Business Cover Letter (BCL) from a U.S. company. The BCL must be an original signed document on company letterhead indicating the date, duration and purpose of travel to China, list a contact and address at the host company, and observe moral and financial responsibility for the applicant.

 1.5

Letter of Invitation

Applicant must submit a Letter of Invitation from the inviting party or organization in China. The invitation letter must be issued by a Chinese government, company, corporation or institution and must include the following information. Recent changes to Chinese visa requirements require the letter include the following information:

  • Personal information of applicant: including full name, gender, date of birth, employer and position.
  • Information concerning applicant's visit to China: purpose of visit, date of arrival and departure, places to visit, relationship between applicant and inviter, and who will bear the cost of the applicant's accommodations in China.
  • Information of inviter: name of unit, phone number, address, seal and signature of the legal representative.

Invitation letter can be submitted as a photocopy, however original invitation and/or personal interview may be requested at visa officers discretion.
Note: Recent changes require that invitation letters must contain an approval stamp. This is generally a red circle or oval stamp applied by a government agent, although some private companies may have their own stamps. Applicants contact in China will be able to obtain easily.

 1.6

Visa Application

Applicant must submit one completed China visa application (following the guide above). Applications should be printed single-sided and signed in blue or black ink only.
